More American Standard condos get green light after sewage capacity reallocation

CAMBRIDGE — More condominium units can start construction sooner in the former American Standard factory in Hespeler.
Waterloo developer Shawky Fahel already had a sewage treatment allocation for 125 of the 200 apartments approved in the former factory at 19 Guelph Ave. The remaining 75 in the Riverbank Lofts were on hold until expansion of the Hespeler waste water treatment plant in 2016.
Now, Waterloo Region says there’s enough treatment capacity to build those 75 homes now. Monday, Cambridge city councillors called on the region to formally allocate that sewage capacity to Fahel’s project.
Since August, 30 units have sold in buildings in the sprawling stone factory complex overlooking the Speed River, and parallel to Queen Street. The new sewage allocation allows work sooner on a Queen Street building that’s the last to be converted.
Demolition and renovation work will start soon, Fahel said. The first residents are expected to move in by November 2013, he said.
